in high school history class i wrote a note to my friend quoting a line from the movie "clueless" that we love:

"i felt impotent and out of control."

my teacher took the note from me, read it, and looked pleasantly surprised. "i've never seen a high school student use the word impotent in a sentence like this laura. very advanced."

i pridefully took the compliment, but at the time i had no idea what the word meant.
