my job

i work as a telemarketer and it is such a study in humanity.

if you talk to someone too fast, they get suspicicous and hang up.

if you talk to someone and seem bored, they tell you they're not interested and hang up.

if you sound like you're reading something, which you are, they'll accuse you of being a "great salesperson" and tell you to save your breath.

if you get bitchy with them they'll get bitchy back and even if they were about to buy something, hang up immediately.

BUT

if you talk slowly and conversationally, laughing at what they say even if it isn't funny, encouraging them to elaborate about themselves and stroking their ego; if you speak intelligently and answer every question they have, ultimately shutting them up; if you talk to them calmly even if they are screaming at you and saying they won't give you a penny and; if you seem invested in what they're saying and personalize the script you are reading to the information they have just said then... you will get anyone, even joey "i'm not giving you a penny" to fork over $700 without even the slightest hesitation.

people, are suckers.
